Moon

I've had this up all month. Realized today is the 24th as I was about to go to bed. Ran outside to see my favorite full moon and it's overcast - can't even see it one bit. Awesome. Here's hopin' for tomorrow night.

Ready to Go Right Now

A fun Memorial Day weekend on the river with my friends is EXACTLY what the doctor ordered. I'm so ready to kick my feet up on the bow of the boat and just be. I don't leave until Saturday morning, but I'm all packed up and ready to go!
Being prepared a little early never hurt anything...

What does everyone else have planned?
Not work, I hope.

Sugar Bun and Kewpie

For a long time I've had an adoration for button noses. And when I came across the work of 1960s kitch artist, Myrle Medeiros, I immediately fell in love with one piece in particular - Sugar Bun. After some hunting, I found a print of Sugar Bun to purchase at a reasonable price from the Etsy dealer, RevivalVintageStudio. It came in a fantastic wood and red velvet frame and inscribed with "Sandra R. Dec 14t, 1978" on the back, which makes it all the more awesome.

It only seemed natural to hang Sugar Bun near my Kewpie doll, which was passed down to me from my great grandma. It's been called creepy more times than I can count and saying so won't offend me. In Kewpie's defense, the 1939 New York World's Fair time capsule contained a Kewpie doll. That, my friends, is not creepy. That is really cool.

p.s. RevivalVintageStudio has a variety of great mid-century/retro decor and collectables if you're into that sort of thing. Fair prices, quick shipping. A+

A Few Links

I'm not one to get all goo-goo over a musical performances. Honestly, to me, music is for listening not watching. But! But, Robin Thicke and Pharrell KILLED it on The Voice the other night. I had never heard that song before because I live under a musical rock and I just wanted to get up and dance with those two high note signing men. And Pharrell. Oh, Pharrell... around 1:07- I can't even handle it. I have a bit of a weakness for the guy. You can watch it here.

My mom upgraded from her Motorola Razr (which can literally be found in a museum now) to an iPhone. I'm nervous, but hopeful for her as a smart phone operator. It's up to me to teach her the ways and I am a person of little patience. I think there will be a lot of, "What DO YOU MEAN you don't understand how to check your voicemail without calling it!? ...You're the only person in the world who leaves voicemails anyways!!"

I graduate college a year from now. I'm two parts excited, one part terrified and one part skeptical. I like to do my reading and stay up to date on the job market for college grads. I came across this article from Forbes. It has the advice we've all heard before and some of it is decent, but the "Network off-site" part is just stupid. Basically it says to spend what little money you do have joining a fancy gym so  you can sweat next to high power executives in the confines of four cement walls in the wee hours of the morning. Um, no thank you. I think I'd rather be unemployed.

One last thing, I will never get over Grumpy Cat aka Tardar Sauce. If you have nothing better to do, you can watch this video of Tardar. Spoiler alert! ...She gets into a box.

You Know You've Made it When... {Congrats to Elsie and Emma}

It's safe to say that this day in age you know you've made it if you've developed a successful iPhone app. And, as most of you know, that's exactly what the girls from a beautiful mess have done. A big round of applause to Elsie and Emma! Their photo app is cute as a bug's ear and more user friendly than 99% of the apps out there. I've already spent more time than I'd like to admit playing with it...

Without the darling minds of E&E, I wouldn't have ever been able to convey these messages quite the same

+ A little piece of me dies inside when I think of my mornings with no toast made from Dave's Killer Bread

+ Not a poop crumb. That it is indeed an itty bitty sea urchin

+ I prefer used books over new books

+ Thanks to the a beautiful mess app I kinda forgot that this is a terrifying and troubling photo of a murdered bear

+ Valentine only thinks about herself

+ OMG! my baby hairs have almost turned into fringe. When will the madness stop!? #newgrowth

A serious congrats, ladies!!! What you've done is seriously so cool and inspiring to many. Thank you for that! ... along with adding to the long list of things we can all actively use to procrastinate with.

Take a visit to the iTunes store, if you haven't already

Gatsby? What Gatsby?

On Saturday, I took myself on a date to The Great Gatsby. I kinda-absolutely loved going to the movies alone. Surrounded by couples, I sat there with damp eyes glued to the screen, smiling from ear to ear.

Like most literature lovers, I've been a fan of the book since I read it my junior year of high school. I've read it twice since then. With one of those times being a few days ago, it's safe to say I'm fairly familiar with the story and I thought it was represented wonderfully! First of all, Leo played a perfect Gatsby (but what doesn't he play perfectly?). Second, the movie put most emphasis on what is at the core of the novel - Gatsby building his lavish empire for nothing more than the attention of Daisy. All Gatsby really wants is Daisy and to relive the nostalgic memory of their past. There is no doubt that the parties, the glitz, the socio-economic climate of the twenties and the relationship between Nick and Gatsby are crucial to the story, but only as players to illuminate one thing -  a man with the shiniest of shells and the softest of insides.

The most common complaint that I've read and heard about Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of the story is that it doesn't go deep enough. To that I say, movies are never able to go as deep as a novel and we all know this! Fitzgerald's story of Gatsby is told through the eyes of Nick looking into a magical, destructive world that is symbolized by color. With that being said, Luhrmann's  color saturated, surreal style is perfect for The Great Gatsby.

Seen the movie? What did you think?
